No surprises from UEFA. Rodrygo Goes has been handed a two-match suspension following his red card against Benfica in the final group-stage game of the Champions League. As a result, the Brazilian winger will miss both legs of the play-in tie, once again against the Portuguese side.
Rodrygo was shown two consecutive yellow cards for protesting and persistently complaining after Italian referee Davide Massa disallowed Kylian Mbappé’s 3-3 equalizer. The goal was ruled out for obstruction, with Mbappé judged to have interfered with Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin as he attempted to take a goal kick. UEFA based the punishment on the article that sanctions insults or abusive language directed at the refereeing team.
The disciplinary measures did not stop there. Both Benfica and Real Madrid have been fined 40,000 euros, while José Mourinho and Álvaro Arbeloa received formal warnings for delaying the start of the match.
