Atlético de Madrid has approached UEFA about the disallowed penalty by Julián Álvarez at the end of Wednesday’s Champions League match against Real Madrid. Shortly after, UEFA released a statement to address the incident.
According to UEFA, although the contact was minimal, Álvarez touched the ball with his supporting foot before striking it. "The player made contact with the ball with his ground foot before kicking it, as shown in the attached video. Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), VAR had to alert the referee that the goal should be disallowed," the statement clarified.
UEFA also mentioned that discussions with FIFA and the IFAB will take place to evaluate whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where an unintentional double touch occurs.
The European governing body, responding to Atlético’s request, felt the need to clarify the situation and share footage that was not shown during the live broadcast.
The VAR intervention, contrary to speculation, was not initiated by Real Madrid players but came from the VAR room itself, which identified the irregularity in footage not aired during the match.
In the statement, UEFA stressed that the rule had been applied correctly, despite acknowledging its harsh consequences. While the IFAB has already introduced next season's rule changes, they do not include any alterations to the double-touch rule for penalties.
Although UEFA seeks to lessen the penalty for unintentional double touches, IFAB is not considering an immediate rule change.
