Fede Valverde has stepped forward to clarify the controversy surrounding his behavior during Real Madrid’s Champions League match in Almaty. The Uruguayan midfielder issued a firm statement denying claims that he refused to play against Kairat, expressing his frustration with the speculation: “Under no circumstances can they say I refuse to play.”
Valverde had originally been penciled into the starting XI, but Xabi Alonso opted for Dani Ceballos at the last moment. The change visibly upset the midfielder. On the bench, he avoided warming up with the other substitutes, and when instructed to do so in the second half, he did it slowly and reluctantly, with a serious expression. Ultimately, he never came on, fueling speculation of a rift with the coach—especially after his recent admission that he does not enjoy playing at full-back.
On social media, Valverde addressed the matter head-on: “I’ve read several articles that have damaged my reputation. I know when I’ve played badly, and I admit it. But to say I refused to play? Never. I’ve given everything and more for this club. I’ve played with fractures and injuries, never asking for rest. That’s who I am.”
He also emphasized his bond with Xabi Alonso: “I have a good relationship with the coach, which gives me the confidence to say which position I prefer. But I always make it clear that I am available to play anywhere, in any match, on any trip.”
Valverde concluded with a powerful declaration of loyalty: “I’ve left my soul in this club and will continue to do so. Even when things don’t go my way, I swear on my pride that I will never give up. I will fight until the end, playing wherever I am needed.”
