Matchday three of the EA Sports League has already delivered one of the season’s most controversial moments. Lamine Yamal went down in the Rayo Vallecano box after contact with Pep Chavarría, and referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer awarded Barcelona a penalty.
Rayo players protested furiously, but the real controversy lay in the fact that the referee could not review the play with VAR. Technical problems in communication with the video referee room had appeared early in the match. Although the connection was briefly restored, it failed again just as the decisive incident occurred.
Lamine stepped up and converted the penalty, netting his second goal of the season and giving Hansi Flick’s Barcelona the lead in Vallecas.
But Rayo did not back down. In the second half, they grew into the game, forcing Barça keeper Joan García into several outstanding saves. However, Fran Pérez eventually found the breakthrough, scoring from a corner and sealing a deserved equalizer for the home side.
