Vinicius Junior has reacted on social media to his sending-off during Real Madrid's 1-0 victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday. The Brazilian forward, who was shown a red card in the 72nd minute, shared a brief message on Instagram after the final whistle.
"The joy continues… My apologies to my team and the fans," Vinicius wrote, celebrating the team's victory while apologising for leaving his teammates with ten men during the closing stages of the match.
The dismissal came during one of the night's most controversial incidents. Having come on as a second-half substitute, Vinicius found the net with what appeared to be Real Madrid's second goal, only for the referee to disallow it after spotting a foul on a Villarreal defender. The Brazilian had pulled Saliba's hair during the tussle before the finish, resulting in a red card.
Visibly frustrated by the decision, Vinicius protested against the referee before leaving the pitch. His sending-off forced Real Madrid to defend their narrow lead with ten men. Yan Diomande had scored the only goal of the match in the 63rd minute.
