The operation to bring Xabi Alonso back to Real Madrid is officially underway. The Bayer Leverkusen manager has made the first move by publicly confirming his departure after two and a half remarkable years at the German club. Speaking at a press conference ahead of their clash with Borussia Dortmund, Alonso stated: “The club and I have agreed that these will be my last two games in charge.”
He explained that the decision was reached through open dialogue with Leverkusen, emphasizing, “We’ve always had good communication, and we believe now is the right time.”
While the Spaniard stopped short of revealing his next destination, his departure adds fuel to speculation about a return to the Santiago Bernabéu. For now, Alonso wants to stay focused on finishing strong: “This isn’t the time to talk about what’s next. Sunday will be a special farewell, and I want it to be memorable.”
Reflecting on his time in charge, he admitted, “It’s a moment filled with emotion. We’ve taken the right steps during this journey, and now I have two very emotional matches ahead.”
