Xabi Alonso is set to return to the Santiago Bernabéu—this time as head coach. The former Real Madrid midfielder will be officially unveiled as the club’s new manager on June 1, and his first major objective will be leading the team in the upcoming Club World Cup.
What makes his arrival even more remarkable is that he joins for free. Bayer Leverkusen has honored a gentleman's agreement made during his contract renewal in 2023, allowing Alonso to depart without any financial compensation if one of his former clubs came calling.
According to Telegraph Football, this clause was a personal request from Alonso, and Leverkusen has fulfilled it as a sign of mutual respect and admiration for the Spanish coach.
As reported by Manu Carreño on ElDesmarque, Alonso will be presented on June 1 and will sign a three-year deal with Real Madrid. His return to the club where he once starred as a player marks the beginning of a new chapter—this time on the touchline, aiming to bring more glory to the Bernabéu.
