The Santiago Bernabéu witnessed a poignant and unforgettable moment as Luka Modric, Real Madrid’s most decorated player with 28 titles, played his final match at the iconic stadium. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as fans, teammates, and the club paid tribute to a true legend who defined an era.

Before kickoff against Real Sociedad, the south end of the stadium unfurled a massive banner featuring Modric alongside the Champions League trophy, encircled by laurel leaves and the message: “Thank you, legend.” At the center of the pitch, a giant jersey with the number 10—Modric’s iconic number—stood tall, symbolizing his legacy.

In the 85th minute, the Croatian maestro was substituted to thunderous applause, replaced by Chema. As he walked off the pitch, Modric embraced his teammates in a long, heartfelt procession. The match paused briefly as both teams formed a corridor of honor, applauding the departing captain. Once on the bench, Modric shared an emotional hug with Toni Kroos, echoing the moment of Kroos’ own farewell at the Bernabéu last season.

After the final whistle, the tribute continued. A touching video montage lit up the scoreboard, chronicling Modric’s magical years in white. Then, standing at the center of the field, he addressed the crowd:

"The moment I never wanted to come has arrived. It’s been a long, but wonderful journey. I want to thank the club and President Florentino Pérez, all the coaches, my teammates, and everyone who helped me through the years. Most of all, I thank my family—without them, none of this would have been possible."

He continued: "We’ve won many trophies, but the greatest prize is the love and affection you’ve shown me. I’ve seen a phrase I really like: ‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.’ Hala Madrid and nothing more!”

The night concluded with Modric lifted high into the air by his teammates, followed by a lap of honor with his partner and three children. Before leaving the pitch, he posed for a final photo with both his family and teammates. Alongside Carlo Ancelotti, arm in arm, Modric stood one last time at the center of the Bernabéu—two icons embraced by the love of the Madrid faithful.

Thank you, Luka.
